How it works
LikelyFunders reads 2025 IRS electronic filings from private foundations (Form 990-PF). Counts come from these filings only.
- Foundation filings read: 106031
- Grants listed: 1765516
- Linked to a registered nonprofit: 989456 (56%)
- Same name and state: 969849
- Same name and ZIP code: 1961
- Similar name in the same city: 17646
- Not linked: 776060
We sort gifts into animal welfare, youth programs, food banks and hunger relief, and arts and culture. When a recipient is a registered nonprofit, we use its IRS category: D for animal welfare, O for youth, K30–K39 for food, and A for arts. Otherwise, we look for cause words in the recipient name and the stated purpose of the grant.
Small-organization counts include public 501(c)(3) nonprofits with $50,000 to $2 million in revenue. Private foundations are excluded. Linking recipients to nonprofits and sorting gifts by cause is not perfect, so some gifts may be missed or filed under the wrong cause. The link rate above shows how many gifts we could tie to a registered nonprofit. It is not a measure of accuracy.
About 69% of foundations in an earlier sample of 2025 filings said they give only to pre-selected charities. That status comes from the filing, and we show it on every result.
